Azuri PayGo Energy has combined solar and mobile phone technology to bring clean energy to people living in Sub-Saharan Africa. The pay-as-you-go solar home system provides eight hours of emission-free lighting each day and enough power to charge mobile phones.

And so, PayGo Energy was born with a simple idea: pay-as-you-go cooking. Cylinders and scales. To begin, the PayGo team put a cylinder of gas and a cookstove in 10 households. We visited each household daily, weighed the cylinder by hand, and charged the customer for the gas consumed over the previous 24 hours. CSM iteration #1 (of many).

According to GOGLA, the association for the off-grid solar industry, around 25 - 30 million people gained energy access with PayGo models between 2015 and 2020. Currently, over 40% of all sales of off-grid solar lighting products in Sub -Saharan Africa are conducted through PayGo, reaching almost 50% in Kenya and 65% in Rwanda.
